• STPA Analysis of Automotive Safety Using Arcadia and Capella This paper demonstrates the use of the Arcadia methodology and the open source Capella tool to implement a STPA-based analysis technique that augments the conventional HARA, HAZOP. The STPA approach extends the conventional methods to include a holistic perspective considering hardware, software, humans, and control failures in a balanced manner.

• Predicting field performance of on-board diagnostics using statistical methods This paper was published in the August 2016 edition of IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Magazine. The paper discusses an elegant technique that was developed at IBM and elsewhere in the 1970s to use statistical sampling to predict how well an on-board diagnostics system would perform in the field.
• Using Model-Based Systems Engineering for Rig-Level Safety Automation This paper introduces model-based systems engineering (MBSE) as a method of tackling the rapidly escalating complexity of offshore drilling rig safety automation. The paper presents two possible approaches: a standards-based SysML approach and implementation of a custom domain specific language.
• SysML Helps Untangle Software Automation Requirements This paper discusses how organizations manage escalating complexity in complex system automation requirements. Presented at the 2014 IADC Advanced Rig Technology Conference in Galveston, Texas.
